CAMILLA

“Oh fuck. Fuck. Oh fuck.”

Dimly, I could recognize that I was hysterical. I could feel the tears on my cheeks, the heaving, messy, hiccuping sobs tearing from my throat. But somewhere deep inside, a smooth, calm, demanding voice was speaking over the chaos.

Move. Get up.

Anton was dead weight on top of me, suffocating and horrific. I didn’t look, I just squirmed out from underneath him, doing my best to avoid the broken glass as I rolled to the side of the bed and retched onto the carpet below.

Come on, hurry. There isn’t much time.

The voice inside me was the only thing I could focus on. My torn dress was puddled on the floor.

Leave it. Find your shoe.

One shoe was still on the bed, kicked off in the struggle, next to the heavy, motionless form of—

No, don’t look. Come on. Keep moving forward.

I gasped through my sobs, choking them back, and found my other shoe discarded by the door. Yes, there. Hidden in the lining of the heel. I pried the molded fabric away and slipped out the tiny usb drive.

Good. Find the computer.

I spun and sprinted out of the bedroom, scanning my surroundings as I went. The penthouse apartment was huge and elaborate, just as I’d expected. Bathroom, kitchen—there was a bottle of whiskey right there on the counter. Had my plan ever had a chance?—living room, another bathroom, another bedroom, office—yes. The door wasn’t even locked. Why would it be? He lived here alone, no one else allowed inside except his guards and the women he—

Not now. No time for that. Find it.

I scanned the desk, ripped open drawers, cabinets. There was no covering my tracks now, no reason to be discreet. There. A laptop, bright and sleek, in the bottom desk drawer. I pulled it out, my hands shaking so badly I almost dropped it. Set it on the desk. Opened the lid. It was already on. The screen lit up, revealing a background picture of—I retched again, bile hot in my throat.

Come on, you’re okay. So close, now. You can do this.

I fumbled the usb drive into the side of the computer, navigated to the menu, just as Devan had instructed, and double clicked the file. It only took seconds. That was it. It was so easy.

Nothing about this was easy.

Now I just had to pray that someone was still back in the hotel room to receive the data. That it would all transfer before somebody found—

You’re done. Get out. Get out get out.

I shoved the computer back in the drawer, taking the usb drive with me as I hurried out of the room, racing back to the bedroom. My dress was ruined, I couldn’t put that on. I spun, my eyes landing on the open door to the adjacent bathroom. A long, burgundy silk dressing gown hung on the back of the door. While the thought of wearing Anton’s clothing made my stomach twist, I couldn’t think of any other option. I tore it off the hook and shoved my arms into the sleeves.
